Yuhibbunahum Kahubbillah Wallazina Amanuu Ashaddu Hubban Lillah -al-baqarah 165- -
This verse establishes a hierarchy of emotion, differentiating between the fleeting attachment of the idolater and the consuming passion of the true believer. It is a forensic analysis of the human heart—revealing that every human being, whether they admit it or not, is a lover. The only question is: Who or what is the Beloved?
: Developing a love for prayer, charity, justice, and kindness, because these actions draw one closer to God.
Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) famously said: "The love of Allah is the foundation of faith. It is the principle upon which all actions are built. Without it, the heart is dead." : Developing a love for prayer, charity, justice,
Ibn Taymiyyah, in his seminal work Al-Ubudiyyah , dissected the loves mentioned in this verse into three categories:
The love of this world ( Duniya ) is the mother of all idols. Regularly visiting the graveyard and reflecting on the Day of Judgment reminds the heart that the only love that survives the grave is the love of Allah. Without it, the heart is dead
Human relationships fluctuate based on mood, utility, and proximity. A believer's love for Allah remains constant through ease and hardship, health and sickness, wealth and poverty.
To grasp the gravity of this verse, we must travel back to 624 CE (2 AH). Most classical commentators (Mufassirun) like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari link this verse to the polytheists of Quraysh who were preparing for the Battle of Badr. Al-Rahman (The Merciful)
Love naturally follows beauty and kindness. By studying Allah’s names—such as Al-Wadud (The Loving), Al-Rahman (The Merciful), and Al-Jamil (The Beautiful)—the heart recognizes that all earthly beauty is merely a faint reflection of His perfection.
: Performing acts of worship, not just as a duty but as a pleasure, brings one closer to the Divine.
Therefore, the believer’s love is Ashaddu (more severe) because the Object of their love possesses infinite beauty, infinite mercy, and infinite power. The lover cannot help but be overwhelmed when they realize they are loved back.
